Hill Harper’s Perspective On Success and Letting Go

Everyone has different ways to take their letting go journey. No one journey for letting go of stuff is the best journey, except for the traveler of that particular journey. The key however is to simply begin the journey by taking that first step toward letting go.

Letting Go Cafe-Hill HarperAt a luncheon in Albuquerque, I recently experienced a presentation by Hill Harper. It was great! Part of the inspiration from his message was its simplicity. Based on a quote by the great late Robert F. Kennedy, Harper shared three key ingredients for letting go and succeeding.

The Robert F Kennedy quote is, “The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of bold projects and new ideas. Rather, it will belong to those who can blend passion, reason and courage in a personal commitment to [their] ideals.”

The first ingredient is “passion.”

Passion is defined as having strong and barely controllable emotion. To understand passion one must understand emotion.

Letting Go Cafe-Robert F KennedyThe definition of emotion is grounded in the latin and french origins of the words ‘émouvoir’ and ’emovere’ respectively. Again, respectively the english translation of those two words are are “excite” and “move.” What happens when you get excited and move in any direction? Energy is created when that happens.

To have passion for changing your life, accomplishing a goal, or making a dream come true requires outstanding, uncontrollable energy and movement toward that specific endeavor.

The second ingredient is “reasoning.”

Reason is defined in part as the power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by a process of logic.” Given this definition, combined with passion, we might better understand how to successfully effectuate change.

In order to – make a positive change, accomplish a goal, make a dream come true, or the like – one must move toward that goal with uncontrollable energy, but to do it using a logical process for how to move – a strategy – if you will. Strategic thinking is what will put legs-that-run underneath the passion you have for making your dreams and goals a reality.

The third ingredient is “courage.”

From Latin root ‘cor’ meaning heart, the word courage simply means to do something with heart. It takes heart to face one’s fears. Courage is having the heart to do what frightens you, in spite of your fears.

Fear is an amazing force and can either be your friend or your foe – the choice is yours.

As you take your letting go of stuff journey, remember these keys as they might prove to be a great way to stay focused. Share this post with the person or persons you believe need this shot in the arm.

Until next time…
