The Best Business Opportunities STILL Begin with Trust.
The Best Business Opportunities STILL Begin with Trust.
Think about the last time someone earned your trust.
Chances are it wasn’t because they had the biggest marketing budget, the flashiest website, or the perfect presentation. It was because they consistently did what they said they would do.
In business, trust has always been, and still is, – the true differentiator.
That is a lesson I learned first hand back in the mid-1990s. When I started building my personal development business from the ground up, I didn’t have a large team or a flashy marketing budget. What I did have was a commitment to one principle: trust. I learned quickly that trust was not just an advantage; it was the very foundation upon which every meaningful business relationship was built. I made it my mission to under-promise and over-deliver, to keep my word, and—if I ever couldn’t—I communicated honestly and early. That simple approach opened doors that skill alone never could.

Let me share a quick story for context. Early on, I worked with a client who was burned by empty promises in the past. I made a point to set clear expectations and check in regularly—even when things didn’t go as planned. About halfway through the project, an unexpected delay threatened our timeline. I had two choices. I could stay quiet and hope the client wouldn’t notice, or I could pick up the phone immediately. I chose the phone. That conversation didn’t simply preserve the relationship. It strengthened it. That client later referred me to three others, all because of the trust we built through transparency and consistency.
Why Trust Remains #1: Three Research-Backed Reasons
- Trust reduces friction and accelerates decision-making. When people trust one another, they spend less time questioning motives and more time solving problems. Research published in the Harvard Business Review has shown that high-trust teams make decisions faster, collaborate more effectively, and experience lower levels of stress.
- Trust increases loyalty and long-term success. Trust creates a sense of safety that encourages people to stay and invest in the relationship. A study published in the Journal of Business Ethics found that businesses with high trust scores retain clients and employees at significantly higher rates.
- Trust – It’s not about being perfect – it’s about being real.. Trust grows through honesty. Research from the American Management Association shows that when leaders communicate honestly about challenges, trust often grows, and teams are more resilient in the face of setbacks.
These principles shaped my business then, and they still guide every coaching session, workshop, and product we offer today. Looking back, I realize that very few of my long-term clients stayed because I had all the answers. They stayed because they knew:
- …what to expect
- …I would communicate honestly.
- …I would keep my commitments whenever possible. And when I couldn’t, they knew I would tell them.
Whether you’re leading a team or growing your own practice, building trust -through small, consistent actions—remains the most powerful business strategy I know.
Being trustworthy is the one thing that you can truly control.
Trust Begins with Self-Awareness
One of the most effective ways to build trust with others is to first understand the patterns that influence your own behavior. Self-awareness is often the first step toward becoming more trustworthy. The Self Managing Grid™ offers a practical, research-based framework to identify patterns, support honest conversations, and move forward with clarity.

The tools we all use will continue to evolve. Technology will continue to advance. Markets will continue to change. The world will continue to evolve. One thing, however, has remained remarkably consistent throughout my career. The best business opportunities STILL begin with trust.
- One conversation.
- One commitment.
- One follow-through at a time.
